Two suspects detained in Malwani murder case

MUMBAI: The Malwani police are interrogating various suspects in connection with the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl.
No arrests have been made so far, as investigating teams are probing various angles in the case. Senior officers confirmed that more than two suspects have been picked up for questioning on suspicion and the investigating officers are quizzing them.
Several teams have been formed to find clues that could expedite the probe in the case. Sources said the girl’s grandfather has given the names of a few suspects with whom the family had a dispute. The police are questioning them as well.
The police have so far recorded statements of the girl’s grandparents, who are the two known persons to have last seen the girl when she had gone to play. The girl, who used to stay with her grandparents, had gone out to play in the afternoon.
When she did not return until evening, her grandparents, along with the residents, began searching for her in the locality. They eventually approached the Malwani police station where a rape case was registered.
The girl’s body was found early on Tuesday in the marshy area near INS Hamla in Malwani. She had various injuries on her private parts and her neck indicating strangulation, said police sources.
Investigating team son Wednesday revisited the spot where t he girl’s body was found. The vaginal swabs of the girl have been sent to Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory for testing and to verify if any part of DNA apart from that of the girl could be extracted from the samples.
