'Why are rates still high?'

When asked why onions' wholesale prices were falling, trader Ashok Karpe said: "The high prices had depressed retail sales. Hence, very few retailers were buying our stocks. The lower demand pushed down prices."

However, when asked why consumers still had to pay high rates, a retailer at Vashi denied wholesalers had reduced prices. "We continue to get onions at high prices. Who told you they have fallen?" he said.

Retailer, Rakesh Gupta, said: "We bought onions at a higher rate. We need to recover that amount. Only then can we think of reducing prices."
