Rathi has lost vision in her right eye and her face was disfigured in the attack. The reason for the attack is not known yet.

The police said the accused, who was travelling in the same train as the victim, was carrying at least a litre of what is suspected to be sulphuric acid.

He attacked Rathi after she got off the Delhi-Bandra Garib Rath with her family around 8am. “The accused followed and tapped on her shoulder.

When she turned around, he threw the acid on her face and fled. The others sustained minor injuries,” said B Shirsat, deputy commissioner of police, Western Railway.

The police have prepared a sketch of the accused and are scanning the passenger list of the train.
