It was a perfect alibi to save a man from attempt to murder charges — weaved together by none other than two policemen. To save a man accused of setting afire a 14-year-old girl in Meerut, two Ghaziabad police constables allegedly entered into a conspiracy and arrested him in a bogus case of liquor smuggling at the Link Road police station.
Ghaziabad police busted the plot during an inquiry and have initiated the process to sack the two constables.
Police said the constables, Jai Govind and Ram Gopal, were allegedly promised money by the relatives of the accused.
The 14-year-old girl was set afire on August 17 morning in an area under Sardhana police station of Meerut district. A man named Rohit Saini and five others were booked for the crime. The six men face charges for attempt to murder, trespass, rioting and criminal intimidation, besides provisions of the POCSO Act.
It is alleged that Saini and other men used to harass the girl, who is critical and is undergoing treatment, in the past. On August 20, Saini was ‘arrested’ with ‘40 bottles of smuggled liquor’.
“Our inquiry found connivance of the two constables. We suspended the two and have initiated the process to terminate their services,” Vaibhav Krishna, SSP, Ghaziabad, said.
Ghaziabad police Wednesday also sent to lines JP Chaubey, SHO of Link Road police station, and Ajay Verma, Maharajpur police-post in-charge for not carrying out a detailed inquiry into the incident wherein Saini was shown as arrested. The Ghaziabad police have also lodged an FIR against the two constables and two others.
