A moneylender allegedly chained up a 12-year-old girl and tortured her for three months in Bihar’s Bhojpur district after her father failed to repay a loan of Rs 20,000.

The moneylender had allegedly abducted the girl after her father left the village in March.

Bihiya police said they rescued the minor from the house of the accused – identified as KP Kharwar – on Thursday. They were tipped off about the girl’s plight by local residents.

According to sources, Kharwar also wanted the victim’s father – a labourer by profession – to pay an interest of Rs 10,000 accrued on the principal amount. She had allegedly been in the moneylender’s custody ever since her father left the village in March.

Bihiya station house officer Kunwar Prasad Gupta said a police team found the girl with her legs chained together at Kharwar’s residence. The moneylender and his family managed to escape, he added.

RB Sharma, the man who fashioned the metal chain for the moneylender, is being questioned with regard to the crime. A hunt is on to arrest the suspects, said Bhojpur superintendent of police Awakash Kumar.
