Dutt made his debut with Chand in 1944 as an actor. Soon (1946), he assisted director Vishram Bedekar in Lakhrani in Pune. It is said that Guru Dutt wrote his classic films Pyaasa at the time when he was switching between jobs.

On October 10, 1964, Guru Dutt was found dead, with a glass carrying the dregs of a sleeping pill beside him.

Guru Dutt has also tried his hand at comedy - Mr. & Mrs. 55 (1955). He introduced Waheeda Rehman in CID (1956), a crime thriller.

In the late 50s and early 60s, he was churning out wonderful cinema - Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1961) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) to name a few. Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam won Dutt Filmfare Best Director's award.

Soon Guru Dutt made Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959). It is said that Dutt was heart-broken when Kaagaz Ke Phool did not make money. In fact, Guru Dutt never directed a movie after that and restricted himself to acting.

After Kaagaz Ke Phool, Guru Dutt acted in Chaudhvin Ka Chand which was produced by him but he did not don the director's hat. It was directed by Mohammed Sadiq.

Guru Dutt (9 July 1925 - 10 October 1964) has directed 8 films, produced 7 and wrote 4. He has given us films like Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam among other classics.
