President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday backed the idea of holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, asserting that simultaneous elections would facilitate accelerated development and benefit people. Addressing the joint sitting of Parliament – the first after the constitution of the 17th Lok Sabha – President Kovind asked MPs to support the idea because it would help in development of the country. One person was shot dead and three others were seriously injured in Bhatpara area of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district as clashes broke out between two groups on Thursday, a police officer said. According to reports, bombs were hurled and several rounds of bullets fired in the air by the members of the two warring groups near a newly constructed police station, which was scheduled for inauguration on Thursday. Sanjiv Bhatt, the ex-IPS officer from Gujarat, was on Thursday sentenced to jail for life by Jamnagar court in police custody death case. Jamnagar’s sessions judge DN Vyas has convicted and sentenced Bhatt but is yet to pronounce the quantum of sentence for six other policemen who were also convicted in this case, according to news agency ANI. Six bodies and the remains of seven crew members aboard the Indian Air Force’s An-32 transport aircraft that crashed in Arunachal Pradesh on June 3 have been recovered from the crash site, a spokesperson of the IAF in Shillong said on Thursday. A fire broke out at a 10-storeyed residential building in Delhi’s Pitampura, a Delhi Fire Service official said Thursday. About 100 residents were safely rescued and no one was injured in the fire which broke out on a fifth-floor apartment around 1 am and spread further.
