Photos: Record number of women-identifying athletes at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

It’s been a week into the historic first gender-balanced Olympics at Tokyo, and there are a record number of women athletes at the Paralympic Games as well. India has sent 56 women athletes to Tokyo in its largest ever contingent yet. “Whereas, LGBTQ invisibility used to make Olympic sports seem out of step with the times, Tokyo is shaping up as a watershed for the community and for the Games — now, finally, starting to better reflect human diversity,” an AP report stated. Weightlifter Laurel Hubbard has thanked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the inclusive policies that will allow her to be the first openly transgender athlete to compete at the Games on August 2. The Games will also mark the first Olympics at which a Pride House has received official recognition from the IOC and will remain a permanent community center after the Olympics end.
