Ambulance delivering patient to Pune’s Sassoon Hospital runs over pedestrian

A 59-year-old man was crushed to death by an ambulance in front of Sassoon General Hospital on Friday afternoon.The driver of the ambulance was booked for causing death due to negligent and rash driving.
The deceased was identified as Ajit Lakshman Rane, 59, and the driver as Purshottam Vitthal Dodmal, 44.
Rane was crossing the road on foot when the ambulance, carrying a patient from Mhada colony in Hadapsar, ran over him.
"The man inside the ambulance had some skin infection on his chest and the ambulance was bringing him to Sassoon," said Tushar Pachpute, police sub inspector (PSI), Pune railway station police outpost of the Bund Garden police station.
Rane's body was taken to the outpatient department (OPD), located 400 meters from the accident spot, in the same ambulance that hit him. While the doctor inside the ambulance had checked for Rane's pulse, the OPD declared him dead on arrival.
"The ambulance did not have the siren on. The man was crossing the road," said Gia Khan, a bag vendor who witnessed the accident.
Rane was a retired employee of Fiat and was returning from some work related to his provident fund, his family has said.
