Senate Elections: Savitribai Phule Pune University releases dates

Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has recently announced the schedule for the senate elections. As per the schedule, the elections are to begin from November 19. The applications for the candidature in the senate elections have been declared open by the university authorities, and began from October 25.
This is going to be the first election of the University as per the Maharashtra Public Universities Bill, 2016 that was passed by the state legislative assembly and council in December last year.
The aim of the Act is to provide academic autonomy to state universities,for helping them improve their functioning and encourage higher participation of students.
The Act states, that every university is to be governed by the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-vice Cchancellor, deans of faculty and seven directors.
Further, it should also have a registrar, finance and accounts officer and the director of sub-campuses of the varsity. Due to several administrative issues pertaining to maintaining the guidelines of the Act, the elections had been delayed, SPPU officials stated. However, on Tuesday, the varsity declared the tentative schedule of elections.
In addition to this, the schedule for the professor and principal constituency elections is to be announced soon, the officials added. Principals and professors had been given the deadline for online voter registration till October 20. All the required documents for the same need to be submitted to the registrar by October 27.
“The final voter list will be declared after careful scrutiny of the applications. It is after the declaration of the final list, that we will announce the election process,” said SPPU registrar, Arvind Digamber Shaligram.
