Chandigarh: 25 specially abled children to take part in 4th International Yoga Day

The event will be organised by the Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (Ayush) department at Sector 17 Plaza on June 21.

In a unique initiative, children from Society for Rehabilitation of the Mentally Challenged, Sector 31, in Chandigarh will take part in the 4th International Yoga Day to be held on June 21.

The event will be organised by the Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (Ayush) department at Sector 17 Plaza on Thursday. Around 4,500 people participated in the final rehearsal at Sector 17 Plaza on Tuesday.

A senior officer of the Ayush department said, “For the first time 25 specially abled students, who have been trained, will be participating in the event.”

Around 5,000 people are expected to be present at the event, which will start at 6.30 am till 8 am. Union minister Smriti Irani will be guest of honour and Chandigarh administrator VP Singh Badnore will be the chief guest.

“The budget for the event will be Rs 40 lakh, which will be spent on yoga mats, T-shirts, eight LED screens, drinking water, 16 loudspeakers, stage decorations, 10 single-seater VIP sofas and carpeting at the Plaza,” the officer added. Last year we had spent Rs 30 lakh on the event, he said.

The Government College of Yoga Education and Health is teaching yoga at 31 centres across the city, registration for which is free.For the event, prime minister (PM) Narendra Modi’s address will be telecast live. Asanas will be performed as per the national protocol.

Chandigarh hosted the first yoga day event in 2016 presided over by the PM. As many as 30,000 people had taken part in that event. The number reduced to 3,000 last year.

250 take part in seminar on yoga

To mark the beginning of the 4th International Yoga Day celebrations, a seminar was organised by the Ayush department at IMA Complex, Sector-35 on Tuesday.

Around 250 participants attended the seminar presided over by director health services-cum-Ayush director Dr G Dewan.The students from Government College of Yoga also took part in the seminar.A workshop titled Laqshya — for labour room quality improvement — was also inaugurated.

Final rehearsal held in Panchkula

As the city is gearing up for the fourth International Yoga Day onJune 21,a final rehearsal was organised at the Parade Ground, Sector 5,on Tuesday.

Panchkula deputy commissioner (DC) Mukul Kumar said, “The main event will be held at the Parade Ground on Thursday at 6.30am. Haryana governor Kaptan Singh Solanki will be the chief guest.”Around 300 people took part in the rehearsal, said the DC.

DC Mukul Kumar, deputy commissioner of police Rajendar Kumar Meena, armed forces officers, students, government officials, yoga enthusiasts, residents and multiple foundations also took part in the rehearsal.

A yoga marathon for the International Yoga Day awareness will be organised by Patanjali Yog Samiti in collaboration with the district administration at Yavnika park, Sector 5, at 7am on Wednesday, said the DC.
