Direct flights to the Sikh pilgrimage town of Nanded in Maharashtra will take off from Mohali and Amritsar airports in July.

Shiromani Akali Dal Anandpur Sahib MP Prem Singh Chandumajra announced this after meeting Union aviation minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju in Delhi on Friday.

“I have been assured that Air India will start its direct flights to Nanded from both airports in Punjab in July. All arrangements have been made,” Chandumajra said.

The move will facilitate pilgrims visiting Takht Hazur Sahib at Nanded, one of Sikhism’s five takhts (seats of temporal authority), on the banks of the Godavari. The Sachkhand gurdwara was built where 10th Sikh master Guru Gobind Singh died. The inner room of the gurdwara is called Angitha Sahib, the place where Guru Gobind Singh was cremated in 1708. The gurdwara was built between 1832 and 1837 by Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780–1839).
