The Akal Takht on Friday excommunicated Buta Singh, secretary of the managing committee of Gurdwara Chhota Ghallughara, for indulging in an “immoral act” on the premises of the Sikh shrine.

The Takht also declared, Johar Singh, president of the managing committee and former jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, ‘tankhaiya’ (guilty of religious misconduct) for defying its orders by not appearing before the Sikh clergy.

Buta Singh had been caught in a compromising position with a woman on the premises of the gurdwara based in Kahnuwan Chhamb in Gurdaspur district.

The Sikh clergy also dissolved the managing committee of the gurdwara and asked the Kahnuwan panchayat to manage the affairs of the gurdwara till the new management takes charge.

Being the head of the management, Johar Singh was summoned at the Akal Takht on Friday to give his clarification. The Takht also terminated his services as chief of the panel.

While reading out the resolutions passed by the Sikh clergy at the Akal Takht, jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh said, “The Sikh sangat is asked not to have any kind of social, religious and political relations with him until he does not appear before the Akal Takht Sahib for seeking forgiveness.”

Excommunicating Buta Singh, the jathedar said, “The executive committee of the SGPC, which investigated into the matter, has found Buta Singh guilty of immoral act. This has sullied the Sikh image before the world. So, the sangat is asked to shun all kinds of association with him”.

The Sikh clergy also dissolved the managing committee of the gurdwara and asked the Kahnuwan panchayat to manage the affairs of the gurdwara till the new management takes charge. “Mischievous elements and political leaders who patronise them are warned to stop their unfair activities in the gurdwara.”

Notably, Johar Singh came to the Akal Takht on Thursday to appear before the parallel jathedars appointed by the radicals’ Sarbat Khalsa (grand Sikh assembly). The SGPC task force forcibly evicted him from the premises of the shrine to prevent his appearance before the parallel jathedars. This had resulted into a clash between supporters of parallel jathedars and the SGPC task force, wherein three persons were injured. However, Johar appeared before the parallel “jathedars” outside the premises. The latter had also awarded him ‘tankhaiya.’
