Rajwinder Singh, alias Ravi Khwajke, sarpanch of Khwajke village had come to a marriage palace (Gill Garden) on Malerkotla road where he was attacked.

Khawajke, who is said to be in his early forties, was rushed to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries. The assailants reportedly celebrated by dancing and firing shots in the air after killing Khwajke.

Police have started a probe. Cops said seven bullets were fired at Khwajke of which three hit him in the chest.

Police suspect that the killing could be a handiwork of supporters of gangster Kala Hawas who was gunned down on Rahon road in September 2014.

Police had booked Ravi Khawjke, his brother Sandeep Grewal and others in the case. Later, Khwajke had got clean chit in the case. Supporters of Kala Hawas, however, were nursing a grudge against him.

According to police, Khawajke had come to Gill Garden to attend the marriage function of his friend Maninder Singh alias Mani Grewal who is block samiti member from Butari village in Dehlon. Some supporters of Kala Hawas were also present at the event. Punjabi singer Babu Mann was also present and performing for the guests.

Police said Khwajke entered into a spat with some guests over some song. However, Khwajke’s friends intervened and took him away from the dance floor and made him sit on a sofa. Suddenly, four assailants appeared on the scene and opened fire on him.

Khwajke was a student leader during his college days. His brother Sandeep Grewal is also former president of National Students Union of India (NSUI).

Police have started scanning video footage of the function to identify the killers.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (crime) GS Aulakh and assistant commissioner of police Gurpreet Kaur Purewal are investigating the matter.
