Two unidentified armed men robbed an ATM cash van enroute Bhawanigarh after shooting the guard.

Two motorcycle-borne armed men took off with Rs 5 lakh after shooting the guard of a cash van near Bhai Gurdas College, 9km from Sangrur, on Friday.

The incident took place at 11.30am when a private company’s van was going to Bhawanigarh from the city to upload cash in an ATM machine.

The unidentified miscreants reportedly followed the van for some distance before firing at the van’s tyre. They, then, shot the guard of the van and looted cash from four other employees present inside. “They fired a bullet at the guard’s head and looted around Rs 5 lakh. The police have started probe,” said Sangrur senior superintendent of police Sandeep Garg.

The injured guard was rushed to Government Rajindra Hospital. The accused are absconding.
