Youth shot at after spat over cheating chit in exam hall in Moga

The incident happened after the youth threw a copying slip out if the exam hall, which was thrown by Harjeet towards his friend Jaswinder Singh.

A 24-year-old student of BA-first year was injured when his classmate’s friend opened fire at him following a verbal spat over a cheating chit in the examination hall at Guru Nanak College, Moga, on Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as Harjeet Singh, a resident of Moga city and the accused is his classmate Gurpreet Singh alias Gora and his friends Manjit Singh alias Sunny and Rami.

Gurpreet was arrested later, the police said. Manjit and Rami were absconding till filing of the report.

Reports said Harjeet threw a copying slip towards his friend Jaswinder Singh in the examination hall but the slip was picked by Gurpreet who threw it out of the room. After the exam got over at 1pm, Gurpreet and Harjeet started arguing with each other following which the former called his friends Manjit Singh alias Sunny and Rami.

Manjit allegedly shot at Harjeet with a revolver and the bullet hit him in the left arm.

He was referred to the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), Ludhiana, where he is stated to be out of danger.

Moga (city) station house officer (SHO) Gurpreet Singh said they had recorded the victim’s statement and lega; proceedings were underway.

Sources said Gurpreet has a criminal record.
