Five children, who were members of a pilgrimage party, drowned in Mahane River near famous Maa Bhadrakali temple at Itkhori in Jharkhand’s Chatra district on Monday. Locals managed to rescue three children who had also gone to take bath in the river.

The local swimmers managed to retrieve the body of one of the victims while search was on to fish out bodies of other children.

A team from National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) was pressed into the rescue operations.

The incident occurred when a group of eight children, all members of a pilgrimage party, from Maharajganj under the Chouparan police station of Hazaribagh district, went to take a holy bath in the river before going to the temple.

Family members informed the police that when the children entered the river, the waterlevel rose suddenly and the children started drowning. “Within seconds, eight of them disappeared,” they told the police.

Hearing their calls for help, locals dived in and managed to rescue three of them from the river while others could not be found, police said.

Chatra deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) Pitamber Singh Kherwar said, “Out of the five children who were drowned, one dead body has so far been recovered. Three children were earlier rescued. They are all fine.”

The DSP, who was camping at the site, said search operation was on to trace four others. “An NDRF team has also been pressed into the rescue operation,” he added.

The deceased was identified as Sahil Kumar Kesari, son of Manoj Prasad Keshri from Maharajganj village in Hazaribag.
