Global United Media , which now owns the Kerala theatrical rights for Vijay’s Mersal, had distributed Baahubali as well.

If you’re a Vijay fan, you have every reason to celebrate that the actor’s upcoming Tamil release Mersal is making waves at the box-office even before its release. With its pre-release business going through the roof, the film has set very high expectations from the trade and audiences alike. After selling its theatrical rights across the length and breadth of the country for record price, the makers of the film sold Kerala theatrical rights to Global United Media (GUM), the distributors of Baahubali 1 & 2, for a whopping price of Rs 7 crore, making it the biggest buy for a Vijay starrer.

The film marks the second time collaboration of Vijay and director Atlee after last year’s Theri. Vijay plays triple role in Mersal, bankrolled by Sri Thenandal Studios and has music by AR Rahman. According to reliable sources, he will be seen as a panchayat head, a doctor and a magician. The actor’s comic timing will be brought forth on screen through the magician’s role. His portions are intended to evoke laughter and lighten up the mood. In the film’s first poster, released recently, Vijay can be seen as the panchayat head, sporting a twirled mustache, and this role will be seen in the period portion. There is Jallikattu reference in this poster and it could be perceived that the film may address the recent Jallikattu row in Tamil Nadu. Vijay is seen as a magician in the second poster and although it wasn’t as well received as the first, fans still celebrated both the posters.

The film also stars Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Nithya Menen as Vijay’s love interests. Actor-filmmaker SJ Suryah is playing the antagonist and since his terrific performance in last year’s Iraivi, audiences are keenly looking forward to see him lock horns with Vijay. Double Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman is composing the music.
