‘The length of a role doesn’t matter’
Actor Parna Pethe doesn’t fret about the length of a character as she enjoys being a part of impactful films
Actor Parna Pethe’s love for Pune and theatre go hand-in-hand. Parna started acting while studying at Fergusson College and has continued to follow her passion. “Pune introduced me to the world of theatre and films and it definitely helped me grow, both as a person and as a professional. I have been part of two theatre groups, Aasakta Kalamanch, and Natak Company, both of which play an important role in my career,” says Parna.
The daughter of playwright and director Atul Pethe, Parna has worked in films such as Photocopy (2016), Baghtos Kay Mujra Kar, Rama Madhav (2014) and Vihir (2009).She will next be seen in Faster Fene, opposite Amey Wagh. Speaking about the kind of roles that appeal to her, Parna says, “I pick roles that have strong characters. I like to play fierce, independent and hard-hitting characters. The length of a role doesn't matter as long as the character is taking the story forward. It is very important that my character adds to the story. I like to explore and experiment. I do not want to fit into a mould or get stereotyped.”
So, does that mean she is against playing the typical girl-next-door or portraying a character who’s just a pretty face? “Well, every actor has their own perception of films, plays and roles. I cannot say this is right or this is wrong. Everyone has the right to choose what they want. Like I said, if the character is adding to the story, I will happily play it. For example, in Faster Fene, I play a journalist who seeks the truth. It is not a love story, but she is an important part of the protagonist’s life.”
