Commonwealth Games 2022 Highlights Day 8: Medal rush in wrestling; India face shootout heartbreak in women's hockey SF

Divya is the first Indian wrestler to face defeat today. She was facing the 2018 gold medallist and Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Blessing Oborududu of Nigeria. She ends up losing by technical superiority, although Divya managed to hold out until the sixth minute of the bout. 

Deepak goes 6-0 up within the first minute of the bout. He needs just half a minute more before making it a tech win. He reaches the semis as well. 

And that's it! Done and dusted! Sindhu storms, breezes, sleepwalks (use whatever adjective you want to) into the women's singles quarterfinal with a 21-10, 21-9 win over Uganda's Husina Kobugabe.

Well that was over before it started. Bajrang pins his opponent from Mauritius and wins the bout inside the first minute. 

It's too easy for Sindhu. Sort of extended warm-up session for the Indian shuttler. She has sauntered into an 11-6 lead in the second game.

10-1 win for Mohit Grewal. He couldn't get to tech but ends up winning at the end of the full six minutes. 

Sindhu made a few uncharacteristic errors after the break but despite that, she had no trouble in taking the first game 21-10 against Uganda's Husina Kobugabe. India 1-0 Uganda in the women's singles round of 16.

PV Sindhu has taken a comfortable 11-4 lead in the first game of her women's singles round of 16 match. She was trailing 2-3 in the beginning, perhaps wasn't warmed up properly but once she hit her straps, it was always going to be one-way traffic.

Sakshi Malik (62kg) and Anshu (57kg) are both through to the semis after straightforward wins. Sakshi is through to the semis with a win by technical superiority over Kelsey Barnes in just over a minute. Anshu wins by technical superiority as well.

India's PV Sindhu is taking on Uganda's Husina Kobugabe in the badminton women's singles round of 16. The two-time Olympics medal-winning Indian shuttler is an out-and-out favourite to win this and advance to the quarterfinals.

Sathiyan takes the third game 12-10. He has won the previous two games 11-9 and so it hasn't been easy going for the Indian. 

PV Sindhu is set to play Uganda's Husina Kobugabe on the show court, which is currently hosting a pairs from Malaysia and Australia. That match is still in its first set and so there is some time for the former world champions game.

The Indian faces Northern Ireland's Paul McCreery. Meanwhile Sanil Shetty facees Derek Abrefa of Ghana. 

It ends 21-9, 21-12 and Srikanth goes through to the quarterfinals. The Indian was just too good here and quite a few of the points that the Sri Lankan scored came from Srikanth's unforced errors. 

Sharath Kamal beats Finn Liu 4-0 (12-10, 11-8, 11-7, 11-6) and goes through to the round of 16. The 17-year-old Aussie certainly gave the fveteran Indian a good fight. 

UWW says that action will now resume only at 1.30pm local time, which is 6pm IST. “There was a technical error and now we are all set. The wrestlers are warming up,” it says in its latest tweet. 

He is up against Dumindu Abeywickrama of Sri Lanka in the men's singles round of 16. Should be another straightforward affair for the Indian former World No.1. 

This is no straightforward affair for Sharath Kamal but he has managed to take the first game 12-10. 

Here is the Indian legend in the men's singles round of 32. He is up against Australia's Finn Luu. This is his third match of the day, he has played mixed doubles and men's doubles and won both. 

Well it seems the “security concern” was noise that came after a a speaker fell from the ceiling just minutes after the first session began, according to PTI. 

“Only five bouts could be completed when a speaker, used to relay announcement, fell near one of the mat chairmen, raising a safety issue at the Coventry stadium and arena on the opening day of the wrestling competitions. This was right after India's Deepak Punia had won his opening 86kg bout. The gathered fans were asked to vacate and a thorough check was ordered by the organisers, who fixed a restart of the session at 12:45 local time,” says their report. Just a reminder - wrestling bouts are set to begin at 5.15pm IST. We will keep you updated if there are any further delays. 

Ancy manages a second jump of 6.25m. Her final jump is deemed illegal which means 6.25 is her best attempt. She thus finishes 7th in her group and that will be the end of her campaign. 

No problems for the Indian pair. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand beat Jemimah Leung For Sang and Ganesha Mungrah of Mauritius 21-2, 21-4 and sail into the quarterfinals.

They are up against Australia's Xin Yan and Dillon Chambers in the men's doubles round of 16. They currently lead the Australians 2-1 are 4-2 to the good in the fourth game. 

It seems we are going to have a longer wait for the wrestling action to begin. The details are murky but people have apparently been asked to evacuate the stadium. The UWW now says that bouts are set to resume at 12.45pm local time, which is 5.15pm IST. 

India's Muhammed Anas, Noah Nirmal, Muhammed Ajmal, Amoj Jacob qualify for men's 4x400m relay race final. They were fourth before Jacob overtook the runners from Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago. The team have managed a time of 3:06.97 seconds.
