Tokyo Olympics Highlights Day 8: Kamalpreet Kaur qualified for the final of the Discus event but shuttler PV Sindhu lost to Tai Tzu Ying in the semifinals of the singles event. The India women's hockey team sealed its place in the quarterfinal finishing 4th in Pool A.
Tokyo Olympics Highlights Day 8: India women's hockey team defeated South Africa 4-3 in their last pool A match and progressed to the quarterfinals following Ireland's 0-2 defeat to Great Britain. Shuttler PV Sindhu lost to top-seed Tai Tzu-Ying in straight games - 18-21, 12-21 in the semifinal of the women's singles badminton title. India's Pooja Rani lost her quarterfinal match to China's Li Qian by unanimous decision in women's middleweight 75 kg category. Anjum Moudgil and Tejaswini Sawant failed to qualify for finals in 50m Rifle 3 positions. Kamalpreet Kaur earned direct qualification to the Women's Discus final event with a 64m throw. Seema Punia was knocked out. It was a disappointing start for India on Day 8 with boxer Amit Panghal getting knocked out after losing to Colombia's Yuberjen Martinez in the Men's Flyweight Round of 16 match. Archer Atanu Das also lost to Japan's Takaharu Furukawa in the pre-quarterfinal match and was knocked out. India women's hockey team create history
In a huge update, the India women's hockey team has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Tokyo Olympics. Having earlier beaten South Africa 4-3 in their final Pool A game, India needed Ireland to either lose to or draw with Great Britain. And that's exactly what happened. Playing their maiden Olympic Games, Ireland lost 0-2 to Great Britain, this ensuring India a place in the knockouts. They finish fourth in Pool A and will face Australia in the quarterfinal on Monday, August 2.

A new world record at the Olympics!
Jamaica's Elaine Thompson-Herah successfully defended her Olympic 100m crown on Saturday, storming to victory in an Olympic record time of 10.61sec. Thompson-Herah led a Jamaican clean sweep of the medals, with two-time champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce taking silver in 10.74 and Shericka Jackson bronze in 10.76.

If the first game began on an even keel, the second is pretty opposite. Tai has the wood over Sindhu and she's used the angles well to race to a 10-7 lead at the interval.
Tai takes the first game 21-18
After trailing initially, the World No. 1 has come back strong to take the first game against PV Sindhu 21-18. Absolutely top class. Neck-and-neck from the two athletes as the two shuttlers matched each other point for point. However, in the end, it was Tai who just sneaked past Sindhu and took a one-game advantage. Game 2 coming up. Can Sindhu stay alive?
Second long rally goes to Tai
You always knew that getting into rallies was always going to work in Tai's favour and that's how it's exactly panned out. Plaudits to Sindhu for stretching her opponent, but a wide cross-court smash does it. Tai ahead 19-18.
Sindhu comes back, it's riveting stuff
When you've faced each other 18 times in the past, it's obvious to know each other's game as well as these two. Sindhu ensuring Tai doesn't build on her lead. A couple of small errors gives the Indian two points and it's 14-14 at the moment. What a game. Stuff of champions.
Clever from Tai, in the lead
Her trickery is what makes her so threatening. And Tai's bag has no shortage of it. Deceived Sindhu for the smash, but instead plays a drop shot and foxes the India shuttler. She has eyes on the court like a hawk. Four consecutive points and she's in the lead 12-11.
Tai bounces back
Trailing 3-6, Tai has gotten in the groove, narrowing the deficit to 6-8. A great backhand kill from the Chinese Taipei; absolutely smashes the racquet on the shuttle.
Sindhu's Semifinal begins
And it's an early lead for the Indian shutter. PV Sindhu is ahead 7-3 using her cross court defensive techniques brilliantly. She is after all, a big tournament player. Tai challenges but it's ruled in favour of Sindhu. The fight is on.

China's Li Qian takes the second round over India's Pooja Rani by unanimous decision. All five judges once again considered Qian to be the dominant boxer in the opening round and given her 10 points each. Not much that Pooja can do here. It's onslaught from the second seeded Chinese boxer.

China's Li Qian takes the first round over India's Pooja Rani by unanimous decision. All five judges have considered Qian to be the dominant boxer in the opening round and given her 10 points each.
