Tiger Woods DUI row: Expert says jail is unlikely but tough penalties expected: ‘chances are remote’

Tiger Woods, one of golf’s most iconic figures is taking a step back to focus on his health after a DUI arrest in Florida. While the arrest could have serious legal implications, experts say Woods is unlikely to face jail time as he seeks treatment and works on recovery.

What the lawyer says

Legal expert Gregory Doll told Page Six that while jail time is technically on the table, it is far from likely.

"My understanding is that he was impaired from medication, not from other recreational drugs or alcohol," Doll said.

“While that is not a good thing, I don't see any judge wanting to send him to jail, particularly because no one else was hurt in the accident and he's already seeking treatment,” he added.

However, Doll was clear that Woods' 2017 DUI which is strikingly similar in nature works against him.

"He has a 2017 incident that is similar in nature, and this time he apparently refused to submit to a urinalysis," Doll said, describing the prior incident as an "aggravating" factor.

According to Doll, the judge is likely to send a firm message while stopping short of imprisonment. "The judge may impose a suspended sentence to make sure he stays consistent with his treatment program, and will surely revoke his license for a long time," he said. Community service, Doll added, is "guaranteed."

But on the question of jail, he was reassuring. "The chances that he will go to jail for this are remote. Most judges are decent people and will want to see him get treatment," Doll said. The attorney did warn, however that the judge will make it crystal clear that a third episode would result in "jail or prison time."

Woods breaks his silence

Tiger Woods was involved in a rollover crash in Jupiter Island in Florida on March 27. Neither he nor the other driver, Jeromy Bullard was injured. Woods' family was not in the car with him at that time.

After the crash, Woods was arrested for DUI, property damage and refusal to take a lawful test. Officers found two prescription hydrocodone pills in his pocket and noted signs of impairment, including bloodshot eyes and hiccups.

On Tuesday, Woods posted on X that, "I know and understand the seriousness of the situation I find myself in today. I am stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health… committed to returning in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally."

He also asked for privacy for his family and loved ones.
