Sources in the poll panel said George’s transfer order was issued on Friday night.
Additional director general of police Karan Singh was appointed as the new city police chief after the poll body sought a panel of officials from the Tamil Nadu government to select George’s replacement.
The bypoll to the RK Nagar constituency is scheduled for April 12. It was necessitated following the demise of then Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa last year.
The DMK MPs had in the petition said S George could influence polling in favour of the ruling AIADMK.
