Guest Column| Bring Punjab back on national agenda

The central government must play a proactive role in addressing Punjab’s challenges. As it did during the Green Revolution, it should bring the state back to the national forefront. Allocating funds for infrastructure, facilitating fruitful dialogue on contentious issues, and ensuring fair representation of Punjab in national policies are essential actions.

Challenges, such as water disputes, territorial rights, economic stagnation, rising unemployment, and the agrarian crisis, transcend partisan politics. These are not issues to be politicised but should form the foundation of a unified agenda for Punjab’s leadership. (Representational photo)

GDP data shows farmers’ incomes haven’t grown, but expenses rising

The inflation-adjusted and inflation-unadjusted farm growth rates being equal corroborate the income crisis faced by farmers, who found prices of key agricultural commodities plummeting after they produced a bumper harvest.

One small detail buried in India’s full-year gross domestic product (GDP) estimates for 2018-19, released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on Monday, summarises the country’s entire agrarian crisis: the farm growth rate, after being adjusted for inflation is the same as the farm growth not adjusted for inflation. Both stand at 3.8%.(Sanchit Khanna/HT PHOTO/ Representative Image)

Don’t blame farmers for being unreasonable

The problem in these sectors is rooted in a prolonged mismatch in demand and supply. If sugar mills and dairies start going bankrupt because they cannot sell sugar and milk powder, even successful institutions and mechanisms such as cooperatives for dairies and fair and remunerative prices for sugarcane are bound to lose their relevance

In the past four years, milk output has grown by over 6% every year. That fact, coupled with a slump in global prices of skimmed milk powder is adding to the agrarian challenge India faces.

Activists of the Progressive Dairy Farmers Association spill milk on road against the declining milk purchase prices at Parliament street in New Delhi on July 31, 2018. A slump in global prices of skimmed milk powder has hit India’s exports, resulting in a surplus domestic stockpile, especially in the liquid milk sector.(Mohd Zakir/HT File Photo)
