Death toll in Assam floods cross 100; nearly 25 lakh still affected

According to a bulletin issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), two persons died at Kalgachia in Barpeta, two more at Kachugaon in Kokrajhar and one at Bhuragaon in Morigaon district.
As on Sunday, nearly 25 lakh people in 2265 villages in 23 of the state’s 33 districts were still affected by floods. Goalpara (4.70 lakh) was the worst affected district followed by Barpeta (3.95 lakh) and Morigaon (3.33 lakh).(PTI)

Assam flood situation continues to be grim; Centre assures Rs 346 crore as relief

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 26 of the state’s 33 districts are still reeling under floods. Nearly 45,000 people uprooted by flood waters are still taking shelter in 391 relief camps.

Assam’s flood-affected battle Covid-19 in relief camps; none infected yet

There have been no reported cases of Covid-19 infection yet from the relief camps, which are usually located in government educational institutions and temporary structures.

Assam flood situation continues to remain grim; over 35 lakh affected, 66 dead

With six deaths due to drowning reported from Sonitpur, Barpeta, Golaghat and Morigaon districts on Wednesday, the death toll in this year’s floods rose to 66. Another 26 have died in the state due to landslides caused by heavy rains.

One person died due to drowning in Dibrugarh on Friday taking the total number of deaths due to floods in this season to 16.
A total of 18,234 persons uprooted due to flooding are taking shelter in 142 camps in 9 of the affected districts. Rescue personnel evacuated 151 people trapped due to floods in Dhemaji, Nalbari and Dibrugarh districts on Friday.(PTI)

Voting on religious lines, Bengali speakers may help BJP, Congress win in Assam

The ongoing polls to the 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam is seeing a trend where Bengali speaking Hindus and Hindi speakers appear to align with the BJP while Bengali speaking Muslims, particularly in lower Assam, prefer Congress over AIUDF.
According to the 2011 language census, Bengali speakers increased from 22% in 1991 to nearly 30% in 2011. During the same period, the number of Assamese speakers decreased from 58% to 48%.(PTI PHOTO)
