Farm fires back in Punjab, 214 cases reported in fortnight

With paddy harvesting underway in Punjab, farm fires have started with 81 cases reported on Saturday, mostly in the Majha region. In an effort to reduce stubble burning, the Punjab government has promised to decrease it by 50% compared to last year. The state recorded 49,000 farm fires in 2022, down from 71,000 in 2021. Punjab plans to make six districts farm fire-free and has measures in place to manage paddy straw. Stubble burning contributes to severe air pollution in North Indian states and Delhi. Farmers argue they have no choice but to burn stubble due to lack of affordable alternatives.

Wheat arrival picks up in Punjab mandis

Punjab's wheat arrival this season is far behind last year's at 15.05 lakh tonnes due to rain, hailstorms and wind damage. The state has so far procured 1.94 lakh tonnes across 1,111 mandis. Arrival is expected to pick up by the end of the week as full-scale harvesting begins. The state government will also own the value cut imposed on damaged wheat crops due to the weather, announced Bhagwant Mann, Punjab's chief minister, via Twitter. The value cut will cost an estimated INR60 crore ($8m) for the 100-120 lakh tonnes of crop expected to reach the mandis.

Punjab’s Malwa region witnesses lean buying

Wheat procurement in southwest Punjab has been slow due to unseasonal rain that flattened plants and left foodgrain stocks below procurement specifications. Purchase activity is expected to pick up after revised norms are announced. So far, only 4,230 tonnes of wheat have reached the mandis, with Bathinda expecting the arrival of 9.50 lakh tonnes. Purchase centres in around 30 market committees did not witness procurement of wheat, and no grain was purchased on Tuesday. The slow harvesting has been attributed to the lean procurement activity in the region.
