Ahead of PM Modi’s visit, strategic Atal Rohtang Tunnel ready for inauguration

On completion, it is set to become the world’s longest road tunnel at an altitude above 3,000 metres. The tunnel is scheduled to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September.

Plans are in the pipeline for developing ski slopes in Tiling Village in Lahaul, to boost tourism in the Himalayan valley.

8.8 km long, 3,000 metre above sea: Know everything about Atal Tunnel

The tunnel is also called Atal Tunnel, as the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had announced the project on June 3, 2000. The work was entrusted to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

Vistadome buses will have a glass rooftop for a panoramic view through the hilly region and will ply through the 8.8-km tunnel, named after former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee

21 more rescued from Lahaul-Spiti

In one of the longest and largest rescue operations of its kind in the state, teams of the Indian Air Force, Border Roads Organisation, police and mountaineering experts evacuated more than 4,800 people.

Over 650 rescued from Lahaul-Spiti, hundreds still stranded in hills

While 24 people, including five foreigners, were airlifted by IAF helicopters, others were evacuated through the Rohtang Tunnel by the Border Roads Organisation personnel.
