‘Not everyone in Bengaluru earns lakhs’: Woman calls out landlords over rising rents

A Bengaluru woman has sparked a discussion on rising rents in the city after claiming that many landlords assume every tenant works in the IT sector and earns a high salary.

The woman, who goes by the username @Namma_rants on Instagram, shared a video in which she spoke about the difficulties faced by people from different professional backgrounds while looking for affordable housing in Bengaluru.
Woman questions rising rents in Bengaluru
In the video, she said, "Owners in Bangalore really need to understand that everybody... whoever comes here to Bangalore... not everyone works in IT, and not everyone is earning lakhs of rupees. No, this... this is the reality, that whoever comes here, everyone's work is different, everyone's payment is different. So, the rent that you are fixing, keep this in mind and consider that not everyone is earning lakhs."
She further added that while inflation has affected everyone, the constant rise in rent and security deposit has made survival difficult for many tenants.
"I mean, I understand that inflation has risen, everything has risen, but here, the way the rent keeps increasing, and the way the deposit keeps increasing... it is not easy to survive here. I mean, a lot of people are facing this exact problem—that brother, survival is becoming very difficult here. What will we earn, what will we eat, and what will we save?" she said.
She also responded to those who often tell migrants to return to their hometowns if they cannot afford city life.

"Now, again, people here will say, 'But Didi, who called you here? Go back.' We have come for work, right? Everyone steps out of the house to earn. That doesn't mean that, 'Brother, because the rent is high here, I should go and sit back at home," she added.

The clip was shared with a caption that read: "In a recent conversation with the owner while I was trying to bargain he bought it up saying you’ll earn in lakhs and come from IT department so why are you asking to reduce the rent? That shook me and I was like I am not from IT and only IT people are kit the ones buying the flats so what about people like us? Where should we find a place? That’s why I want to burst this bubble for the owners here"
