Actor Disha Vakani is said to be returning to the popular TV sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah as the fan-favourite character Daya Ben, according to latest reports. The actor has been on maternity leave for the past several months, and had been rumoured to have departed the show.
Mid-Day reports that the actor will make her much awaited comeback on May 18, and has got in touch with the show’s producer, Asit Kumar Modi. Modi is currently on vacation in Italy, and had previously said that they were looking for a replacement for Disha, and have been screen testing potential replacements.
Modi had said in an earlier interview, “Replacements and leap jumps are common in the television industry, they keep happening. It is nothing new and in the past whenever replacements have taken place, new actors have got accepted by the audience. On TV, an actor is known for its character and not by his name. Yes, we have started looking out for options because if in future Disha does not want to return we will have to replace her. But I would also like to add that Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah is a positive show so we will hope for a positive result.”
Disha has seemingly confirmed her comeback by posting a picture of herself with TMKOC co-actor Neha Mehta. “Daya with Anjali,” she captioned the photo. As per a report in Spotboye, Disha had put up tough conditions for her return. Apart from stipulations regarding her working hours, she had also asked for a hike in wages; before she quit, she was reportedly bagging Rs 1.25 lakhs per episode. She has reportedly asked for Rs 1.50 lakhs per episode.
Her fans saw this as the sign they’ve been waiting for, and left enthusiastic comments. “Dishaji, the character of Daya became famous only because (of you)... I want you back (on the) show,” one person wrote. “Please come back,” wrote another.
