‘Insult’, ‘apologise’: Nirmala Sitharaman faces TMC MP’s jibe in LS, BJP livid
A major controversy broke out in the Lok Sabha on the first day of the Parliament's monsoon session. Sougata Ray, leader of the All India Trinamool Congress was commenting on the state of the economy when he took a personal jibe at Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Speaker of the House, Om Birla, immediately stepped in and ordered expungement of the remark from LS records. However, Ray remained defiant, asking whether he had used an 'unparliamentary' words. Subsequently, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi criticised Ray for 'insulting womenfolk'. He demanded an 'unconditional apology' from the Dum Dum representative. In her response, Sitharaman also countered Ray's jibes, telling him to concentrate on the contents of the Bill he was opposing, instead of getting 'distracted by other factors'.
