Torrential rains and flash floods have created havoc in Assam's twin districts of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji. Swelling of river Brahmaputra and its distributaries due to continuous rainfall has lead to an increase in the level of water that has now inundated several villages in low-lying areas. Dozens of villages have been partially submerged in floodwaters, forcing the residents to flock higher plains with their belongings and cattle. Water in the swollen rivers continues to rise owing to incessant monsoon rains cutting off road and railway links in many parts of the region.
