Right to Education Act comes into force in India

Nearly eight years after the Constitution was amended to make education a fundamental right, the government on Thursday implemented a historic law to provide free and compulsory education to all children in age group of 6-14 years. Addressing the nation during a live television session, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that his government is committed to ensuring that all children, irrespective of gender and social category, should have access to education.
