Uttarakhand government has restricted human activities in the region of Gangotri Glacier called Gomukh, the mouth of cow, considered as holy by Hindus, located in the district of Uttarkashi. The move has been initiated by the state government to protect receding Himalayan glaciers and prevent environmental hazards posed by excessive presence of humans. Due to ecological imbalance and climate change, the Gangotri glacier is receding at the rate of 10 to 30 metres every year.
