When filmmaker Rajani Mani saw beehives in her neighbourhood being destroyed in pest-control operations, she grew concerned. The more she dug into the issue, the more she discovered that there wasn’t enough information out there to show people why honeybees are friendly neighbours and invaluable as pollinators. She decided to make a film about this. In Colonies in Conflict, Mani explores how widely occurring bees have adapted to urban landscapes, and explores their crucial role in pollination (and thereby, food security).
