Mumbai rains: Over 20 die after landslides hit city, PM announces compensation

At least 25 people were killed in house collapses triggered by landslides in Mumbai. The accidents were reported as incessant overnight rains pounded Mumbai, nearby areas. The city witnessed severe water-logging, disruption of local train services & vehicular traffic. Around 17 people died as a compound wall came crashing down on some houses after a landslide. A fire official said the mishap took place at Bharatnagar Vashi Naka locality in Mahul area. Seven people got injured in the accident & were taken to nearby Rajawadi hospital. In another incident, seven hutment dwellers died as five shanties collapsed after a landslide. According to a civic official, the incident occurred in Vikhroli suburb at midnight. Two persons were injured in the mishap & were sent to a nearby hospital. A 16-year-old boy died after a forest dept compound wall collapsed in suburban Bhandup. The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai in the backdrop of heavy rains. It added that a sudden change in climatic conditions led the city to witness over 100 mm rainfall in 6 hours.
