‘No decision on UCC yet...' Rijiju tells MPs; ‘States empowered to legislate’

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has informed the Parliament that the Modi govt has no plans to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country as of now. In a written reply in the Parliament, Rijiju said that the matter is sub-judice citing writ petitions pending in the Supreme Court. He also said that Article 44 of the Constitution provides that the state shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India.
