A layer of toxic foam was seen floating on Yamuna river at Delhi's Kalindi Kunj. Earlier, the toxic foam was seen floating over the river surface on April 6 & 20. Environmentalists had said frothing could be because of gases reacting with bacteria. The foam at Yamuna river made global headlines in 2019 during Chhat puja. Devotees were seen standing in waist-deep toxic froth in Yamuna at Kalindi Kunj. When inquired, experts said formation of forth was a common thing in Yamuna. Experts, however, added that frothing has increased in the last five to six years. Earlier this year, Delhi govt chalked out a 9-point action plan to reduce the frothing. Frothing in Yamuna is said to happen due to discharge of untreated sewage in the river. State govt has banned soaps & detergents not complying to the latest BIS parameters. NGT has directed awareness campaigns on harmful effects of substandard soaps.
