Meet U.P's social welfare minister, who was country’s first IPS officer to take commando training

In about 30 days – January 15 to March 15 - U.P’s former anti-terrorist squad (ATS) chief and now, state’s social welfare minister Asim Arun's life has undergone a remarkable ‘policing to politics’ makeover. He announced his political entry in style; cleaning up the counting centre after being named winner and then made an impression by walking up to his Samajwadi Party opponent to shake hands with him. “I would do so each time, I contest,” says the former top cop, who was the first IPS officer to do a commando training course. It’s about 8 months now since he became a minister and in this period his vocabulary too has undergone a dramatic change. Now, he doesn’t talk of targeting terrorists. He talks of better ‘scheme targeting’ instead. Without batting an eyelid, he says, “all 80” when asked to guess how many seats would BJP win from U.P. this time.
