Nobel Peace Prize 2021: Why two journalists won the coveted award this year

The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to journalists Maria Ressa of Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia. The pair were honoured "for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace," said the chairwoman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen. In 2012, Ressa co-founded Rappler, a digital media company for investigative journalism, which she still heads, while Muratov is one of the founders of the independent newspaper Novaja Gazeta.
