California wildfires highlights: Firefighters braced for high winds, with the National Weather Service of LA issuing its most serious advisory, “Particularly Dangerous Situation (PDS)".

California wildfires highlights: The raging wildfires across Los Angeles claimed the lives of at least 24 people, with the toll likely to mount as several others remain missing. The monstrous fires have destroyed more than 12,000 structures, forcing over 150,000 to flee their homes. Data from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection showed that only 14 per cent of the Palisades Fire has been contained so far, while Eaton Fire is under 33 per cent containment.

Meanwhile, Hurst Fire, which spread across 799 acres, is almost contained (97 per cent).

A new blaze, 'Auto Fire' erupted in the Ventura County neighbourhood late on Monday and spread over 56 acres, with zero per cent of the fire under containment.

California fire live updates: Residents wait for up to 10 hours to enter charred homes

With reports of looting and a nighttime curfew, police and the National Guard have set up checkpoints to stop people from entering the disaster areas.

This has left many residents frustrated, as they wait in lines for up to 10 hours to try and return to see what’s left of their homes.

One woman, Janelle, told KTLA that she already knows her house is gone, but she needs "closure."

"I’ve seen the photos and videos, but I need to see it with my own eyes," she said, her voice shaking.

The long wait has angered many people, adding to frustrations over hydrants running dry during the first efforts to fight the fire.

California fire live updates: On Saturday, California governor Gavin Newsom took to X to respond to Elon Musk's claims that Democrats had decriminalised looting amid several cases emerging as fires rage in Los Angeles.

“Stop encouraging looting by lying and telling people it’s decriminalized. It’s not. It’s illegal, as it always has been. Bad actors will be arrested and prosecuted,” Newsom had said.
