The Jacksonville, Florida native could face jail time for possession of a firearm because he is a convicted felon.

A man in the US state of Florida accidentally shot himself in the penis after sitting on his gun. However, his travails don’t end there — the Jacksonville native could face jail time for possession of a firearm because he is a convicted felon.

Cedrick Jelks incurred the injury when he sat in his Nissan — he had left the gun in the car and it accidentally went off, Jacksonville-based news outlet News4JAX reported. A friend said Jelks drove home “in a panic” and ran straight to the bathroom. When the friend followed him, she found Jelks’ injury and rushed him to hospital.

Because the injury involved a gunshot, police were called in to investigate, and they discovered Jelks had a prior conviction. The Miami Herald reported he had pleaded guilty in 2004 to cocaine possession.

Thus, Jelk’s possession of the gun could well get him into (even more) trouble — if prosecuted, he faces a minimum three-year prison sentence as well as a hefty fine.
