At least 17 people were killed and 25 others injured today when a passenger bus collided head on with a truck in Sherpur area of northwestern Bangladesh, police said.

"I can confirm you 17 deaths so far, 14 people are being treated with critical wounds at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogra," a police officer told PTI.

But a private television reported 18 deaths saying 12 of them died instantly.

Police said the drivers of the bus, which was going to north-western Rangpur from Dhaka carrying some 45 passengers, and the truck heading to the capital city with tube-well or manually operated water pumps, apparently survived the crash and fled the scene.
