5.5-magnitude quake strikes Indonesia: seismologists

A moderate 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Indonesia's main island of Java today, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

A moderate 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Indonesia's main island of Java on Thursday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 2:10 am (local time), 69 kilometres southeast of Sukabumi and at a depth of 33 kilometres, according to the agency.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "ring of fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
