At least 16 people were killed, including women and children, and 35 wounded by a car bomb in northern Baghdad on Thursday, security officials said.

The blast occurred in the Shahab district, a defence ministry source said, giving the toll, which was confirmed by an interior ministry source.

Four children and three women were among those killed, according to officials at two local hospitals.

Shahab, a mixed neighbourhood, is located north of Sadr City, an overwhelmingly Shiite area in the Iraqi capital.
