A bus carrying 12 people and a car with an unknown number of people were hit by the landslide at around 12 am (local time) in Yanping district in Nanping city, said Zhang Guowang, head of the district's Committee of the Communist Party of China.

"Three people on the bus have been rescued as of 3 pm, and rescuers are still searching for the others," Huang Xiong, head of the district government said.

It was not immediately known how many people were in the car and whether they were buried or not.

Heavy rainstorms have pounded Fujian since Sunday and more rain is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported.
