Pakistan puts official unrest death toll at 38

Pakistan's interior ministry said on Saturday that 38 people have died in the unrest that has shaken the country since the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto.

"In two days 38 innocent people have lost their lives and 53 have been injured," ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema told AFP.

Cheema said the violence had also caused tens of million dollars in damage, with hundreds of shops, offices, banks, trains and cars burned by rioters following Bhutto's death on Thursday.
