The accident occurred on Saturday night on the highway between Quilali and La Palanca, in northeastern province of Nueva Segovia bordering Honduras, news reaching in Managua on Monday said, according to Spain's EFE news agency.

Hospital sources in Quilali told newspersons six people were killed at the accident site and the injured were taken to Alfonso Moncada Hospital in Ocotal, the capital of Nueva Segovia province.

An Ocotal police spokesman told that the cause of the accident had not yet been determined and an investigation was underway.

Radio stations in Managua, however, reported that the bus rolled over after its brakes failed.
