Whether clothes maketh a man or not is a never-ending debate. But clothes definitely do maketh a celebrity. And in India, celebrity wardrobes are an even bigger deal, because the fashion choices of Bollywood (and now TV) actors are avidly followed by millions.

The best designer garments hanging from rails in luxurious walk-in closets; racks full of the most stylish shoes; bottles and bottles of alluring perfumes; drawers stocked with jewelled watches — isn’t that what celebrity wardrobes are made of? Going beyond becoming style icons, some celebrities, such as Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Hrithik Roshan, now also dabble in design, giving fans an opportunity to wear something with the personal touch of their favourite stars.

In the latest feature of our on-going Celebrity Lifestyle Series, we look at the lavish wardrobes and style signatures of Bollywood and TV stars. Read on...

Hrithik Roshan

Preparation is half the battle won. Willpower will take care of the rest. #KeepGoing #HRX #MondayMotivation

A post shared by Hrithik Roshan (@hrithikroshan) on

Hrithik Roshan believes in the right blend of comfort and style — he always says that a comfortable pair of jeans is a must for everyone. As for his own wardrobe staples, the actor owns different kinds of sports shoes; given that he is one of the fittest stars of Bollywood, he must be needing a lot of those. Hrithik has also started his own clothing and accessory line, HRX (in collaboration with a fashion portal), and wears items from his own fashion brand. If there’s one thing that stands out in Hrithik’s wardrobe, that’s his collection of jackets. With a wardrobe full of great stuff, Hrithik manages to be effortlessly stylish. “I just put my hand inside, almost with a blind eye, and whatever my hand grabs, that’s what I wear for that day,” Hrithik was quoted as saying in an interview. The actor is also quite fond of watches and owns brands such as Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre and Rolex. “...Watches became a pre-determined birthday or anniversary gift. It’s one of my staple gifts, too. A watch to me signifies dignity, elegance, makes a statement, and also says that I value you,” he said in an interview.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

A former Miss World, actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is known for the impeccable style and grace with which she carries all kinds of outfits. Aishwarya’s wardrobe is a heady mix of Indian and Western attire. Her favourite designer labels include Elie Saab, Armani, Roberto Cavalli, and Gucci. She has also got an exquisite collection of bags, including Louis Vuitton Alma, Bottega Veneta intrecciato tote, and Swarovski clutches. In perfumes, Aishwarya’s favourite is Clinique Happy. While her gowns at international film festivals make heads turn, her personal style is extremely simple, as she is often spotted in a pair of jeans teamed up with a kurta.

Akshay Kumar

Bollywood’s top Khiladi relies a lot on his collection of comfortable denims and T-shirts. He has been famously quoted for saying, “When in doubt, wear blue jeans and white T-shirt.” Interestingly, Akshay’s wife, actor Twinkle Khanna, has a lot of say in his wardrobe choices — she helps him pick clothes from brands such as Prada and Versace. Known for his stylish accessories, Akshay has Paul Smith belts, Alexander McQueen scarves, and Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla designs. Akshay also signed up as the brand ambassador of the jeans brand Levi’s. Besides that, he has a huge collection of sports shoes, mostly used for his workout sessions.

Abhishek Bachchan

A post shared by Abhishek Bachchan (@bachchan) on

Abhishek Bachchan is a huge admirer of suits and prefers it over any other attire. “If you give me something to wear for sheer comfort, if it wasn’t a tracksuit, it would have to be a suit. I could even sleep in a suit, if I had to,” he had said in an interview. Clearly, the actor inherited his style from his father, actor Amitabh Bachchan, as he remembers how Bachchan Sr used to bond with his suit-maker from Kachins, Mumbai. Abhishek loves to collect accessories such as pocket squares, cufflinks, tiepins, belts, and lapel pins that he can match with his suits. The actor also has a thing for watches and he was quoted saying in an interview, “I love collecting watches. I own some beautiful vintage watches. But I take care to wear the right watch. You can’t wear a sporty watch or a brown strap watch under a black tuxedo. That’s just wrong.”

Sonam Kapoor

Sonam Kapoor’s wardrobe is straight out of a fairytale and perhaps every girl’s dream. Known for her exquisite style, Sonam is undoubtedly one of the most brand-conscious celebrities. Interestingly, Sonam has got a separate room to herself that serves as her personal closet. Talk of shoes, and Sonam swears by Salvatore Ferragamo, Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo, and Dolce & Gabbana. Her collection of perfumes includes Tom Ford Black Orchid, Nina Ricci Apple, Jean Paul Gaultier Classique, Michael by Michael Kors, and Chanel No. 5.

When it comes to accessories and bags, Sonam has a collection of some of the best brands, including Dolce & Gabbana, Dior, and Valentino. I like Calvin Klein and Elie Saab. I like all sorts of designers; I think they all have a sense of self-expression,” she was quoted as saying in an interview.

Shah Rukh Khan

When you are the second-richest actor in the world, nothing is too expensive. Shah Rukh Khan reportedly owns a whopping 257 pairs of shoes, all designer and high-end brands. The 51-year-old actor has also gone on the record to say that perfumes are the only luxury he indulges in, and his favourite is a mix of colognes from three brands — Diptyque, Armani, and Azzaro. London remains Shah Rukh’s favourite shopping destination, and he swears by Dolce & Gabbana and Armani for clothes, and Paciotti and Louis Vuitton for footwear. The actor had once mentioned that he gets put off by skinny jeans, and always makes sure that his own are loose-fitting.

Ranbir Kapoor

A post shared by Ranbir Kapoor (@ranbirkapoor) on

Ranbir Kapoor comes across as a chilled out guy, who isn’t very choosy about brands. He is equally comfortable in a creation from Maison Martin Margiela and a shirt from the corner shop. But, of course, he has a few favourites. While Prada remains at the top, Ranbir is also fond of crisp pin-tucks by designer Rajesh Pratap Singh, with styling done by Mumbai-based designer Kunal Rawal. The 34-year-old actor is a self-confessed watch addict, and swears by the brand Tag Heuer, for which he became the brand ambassador in 2014.

A post shared by Alia ✨⭐️ (@aliaabhatt) on

Alia Bhatt is one of the best-dressed young stars in Bollywood. Her favourite clothing labels are Topshop and River Island, and she adores Bleu de Chanel perfume, as she likes men’s fragrances. Alia has revealed that her favourite footwear is a pair of white sneakers, though she also loves fun loafers and espadrilles, which she is often seen wearing on casual occasions. The actor has a huge variety of shoes, including tan brogues, metallic sneakers, pop coloured pumps, and even mismatched heels. When it comes to colour choices, pop shades of pink, green, and red appeal to Alia, though she sometimes goes for darker hues, too.

Farhan Akhtar

Farhan Akhtar’s style choices are rather eccentric and he finds it tough to define his fashion sense. The actor-filmmaker makes a new style statement each time he tries something new. Asked about his sense of style, Farhan once said in an interview, “I like sharp casuals, sharp formals, and sharp informal [clothes], too.” Irrespective of brands, comfort remains the key for Farhan. Among quirky features of his personal style is his preference for striped socks.

Priyanka Chopra

Priyanka Chopra is a die-hard fan of two popular American lifestyle brands, Abercrombie & Fitch and Hollister, and she picks her daily wear mostly from these two. Priyanka once mentioned that she likes outfits that make her feel the best. Dresses, Indian ethnic wear, ripped jeans — she wears all of that with equal elan. Her footwear favourites are Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo. Her accessory collection is stuffed with a variety of aviator sunglasses, rings, and bracelets. The actor was quoted as saying in an interview, “Quintessential Priyanka would be a great pair of jeans, some solid shoes, an amazing backpack, a jacket, and you’re out the door!”

Shraddha Kapoor

Although Shraddha Kapoor has her own fashion line, Imara, for women, for causal occasions, the actor prefers T-shirts and trousers, as she believes that “if paired and styled well, the ensemble can grab eyeballs”. Outside India, Shraddha loves to shop in London and Paris. The actor once mentioned that among her favourite designers, those who have worked on creating Imara, top her list, followed by some high-profile Indian designers, including Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Manish Malhotra. Interestingly, Shraddha is very fond of traditional wear — her all-time favourite is a sari, the ones with “a unique, modern look”. Clearly, the actor doesn’t follow any one particular style and likes to keep it simple, too. But when it comes to footwear, we hear that Katrina is a ‘shoeaholic’ — on every trip abroad, she checks out the best shoe stores first. In an earlier interview, a friend of Katrina said, “A major chunk of her collection comprises boots. She has boots from various parts of the world. During her trip to London, Katrina spent one full day exploring the high-end stores on Oxford Street. She picked up accessories and outfits, too, but it was the boots that took up most of her luggage space.”

Ajay Devgn

Ajay Devgn, as confirmed by his stylist, loves wearing casual clothing. He loves wearing shirts, and doesn’t mind them even when he’s out for film promotions. Another comfortable, casual, and stylish garment that Devgn has in his wardrobe is his collection of fitted jeans and cargos. The actor loves pairing his shirts with leather jackets, and has an impressive collection of jackets, too. Ajay isn’t a big fan of formal clothing; he prefers wearing Pathani suits— that comfort factor again! — on dressy occasions.

Shilpa Shetty Kundra

Shilpa Shetty Kundra is confident about her style choices and prefers solid bright colours instead of patterns. The actor feels that it’s easier to mix and match accessories with solid colours, whereas patterns look too crowded. Her favourite high street brands include Zara and Whistles. The actor owns 50 dresses and 40 white shirts. For her footwear, Shilpa doesn’t prefer wearing heels during the day, though she likes glamorous shoes from Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Prada, and Gina.

A post shared by Salman Khan (@beingsalmankhan) on

Salman Khan owns the clothing brand Being Human, which is very popular among the youth. The actor prefers wearing clothes from his own brand for most of his public appearances. Not many people know that Salman loves wearing the perfume Very Sexy by Victoria’s Secret — this perfume is the only one for men from the world-famous lingerie brand; it was launched in 2001. Fragrance from Issey Miyake is another favourite of Salman. When it comes to accessories, the actor’s famous bracelet with a blue stone is a show-stealer.

She has always said that the only thing she looks for while shopping is comfort. However, Mouni clarifies that her love for comfort shouldn’t be confused with being under-dressed. “I always had an eye for dressing. I have a very good stylist, Rishika, [who] understands my style,” Mouni said in an earlier interview.
