This film is tailor-made for Akshay sir (Akshay Kumar),” insists Rowdy Rathore director Prabhudheva. He explains why he chose to remake the film in Hindi despite it having been made in Telugu as Vikramarkudu (2006), in Kannada as Veera Madakari (2009) and in Tamil as Siruthai (2011).
“I’ve seen the Tamil and Telugu versions, Ravi Tejaa and Karthi have their unique styles. Akshay sir has his own. There are no comparisons. He’s dynamic. Rowdy Rathore, being an action thriller will stir up the emotions as well because there is always a reason for the fights,” he says.
Co-starring Sonakshi Sinha and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Rowdy Rathore opens on June 1 and as part of the promotions, Prabhudheva plans to host a party with all the Rowdies at the end of May. “It would be fun to get the four Rowdies together at my Chennai home,” he exults.
Interestingly, Bengali cinema’s matinee idol Prosenjit Chatterjee’s Bikram Singha: The Lion Is Back is also reportedly an adaptation of Vikramarkudu and has even used one of the tunes from the hit Telugu track, Jhinta ta jhinta chita. Will he be invited to join the Rowdy party too?
“I don’t know about Prosenjit but I have spoken to Ravi Tejaa, Sudeep (lead actor in the Kannada remake) and Karthi, let’s see. Rowdy Rathore will be the first big film to release after the IPL and we’re excited. We’ve put in a lot of hard work and with God’s grace it will be appreciated,” says Prabhdeva.
How local can a film really go? Are remakes necessary?
