Chandigarh: Panel elected unopposed in 3 city colleges, elections to take place in 8
In three girls and a co-educational college, the environment remained somewhat quiet with two colleges having full council elected unopposed and the other two having single candidate on presidential post

With the filing of PUCSC nominations in city’s 11 colleges, a total of 253 candidates were found eligible to contest students’ council election. Out of 11, elections are bound to take place in eight colleges, as in three colleges there are unopposed candidates on each post. There are 58 candidates in race for presidential post in six colleges, while in five colleges, candidates have been elected unopposed including three girls and two co-educational colleges. The final list of candidates will be issued on Tuesday.
In other colleges, amid 36 degree temperature, students bearing party stickers were seen waiting for the announcement of provisional list of candidates and carrying out rally after the list was displayed. Meanwhile in three girls and a co-educational college, the environment remained somewhat quiet with two colleges having full council elected unopposed and the other two having single candidate on presidential post.
Maintaining its previous trend, this time too, on all four posts of students’ council, candidates have been elected unopposed in Guru Gobind Singh College for Women (GGSCW), Sector 26. This time, Government College of Commerce and Business Administration, Sector 50 (GCCBA-50) and Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College For Women, Sector 36 (MCM DAV-36) joined GGSCW with single candidate contesting on each post.
The nominations of all other candidates got rejected in GCCBA due to shortage of attendance. In MCM DAV college, Sector 36, only three candidates on each post of president, vice president and secretary were found eligible to contest the election and for joint secretary there were no eligible candidates. In Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46, there is single candidate contesting for presidential post and two contesting for secretary while 11 candidates’ nomination for all four posts were found ineligible.
In Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, for president and secretary post, there are unopposed candidates and for the posts of vice president and joint secretary, two person contesting for each post.
The tension remained high in DAV college, Sector 10, Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College (GGDSD) college, Sector 32 and Post Graduate Government College (PGGC), Sector 11 and Sri Guru Gobind Singh College (SGGS), Sector 26. After the provisional list of candidates was displayed, carrying their representative on shoulders, students took out rallies outside colleges, chanting slogans of their party.
Students in DAV college, Sector 10 and in Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26 were seen standing and making announcements of their selection at college gate pillars. In Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, students of Student Organsiation of India (SOI) and an independent group that got separated from SOI only broke out into clash first in campus and then outside.
A faculty wishing anonymity, cited lack of police enforcement outside college gate, that are effective in maintaining peaceful situation around campus during election times. The clash happened when all student parties were outside campus and cheering for their candidates. Principal of PGGC, Sector 11 Prof Rama said no such report of clashes has been received. We are maintaining decorum inside college and for outside, we have written to police for deployment of police personnel.
